What to do? If a Tsunami Occurs When on Vacation?

Suara Id. The tsunami disaster in Banten and Lampung on Saturday (12/22/2018) left deep sorrow because it claimed hundreds of lives and injuries.

The big waves in the tsunami were quite surprising because without an earthquake.

The area with the most casualties is Tanjung Lesung, one of the leading tourist areas or '10 New Bali 'promoted by the Ministry of Tourism.

At the time of the incident, many tourists were victims, including in coastal areas such as Carita and Anyer.

Disaster expert Dr. Samantha Montano on the Forbes page states that tourists and people who are not local residents are the most vulnerable to such a disaster situation.

Because, they are not familiar with the surrounding situation and conditions and how to interpret disaster warnings in the area.

"They also tend not to know what things need to be done when a disaster arrives," Montano said some time ago.

Geophysicists say, when in an unfamiliar area when a disaster arrives, listen to the suggestions of the people there. This can be applied wherever we are.

There are a number of things we can do when a tsunami occurs while we are on vacation:

- Try to go to a place higher than the surface and as far as possible from the location. If we can see tsunami waves it means that our distance is too close and very insecure.

- If you are in a car and close to the beach, get out and run to a high place. Being in the car is not safe because the car door is hard to open due to the large water pressure. Water can also get into the car and make us sink.

- If it is on the boat, face the wave and lead to the sea. Because when we are at sea, the tsunami will be more tame. The wave movement will be more horizontal. Move left and right but not vertically dominant. Waves will be more violent when they arrive on land. That is, being in the sea will tend to be safer. New damage will occur if the ship hits the beach surface.

- When the tsunami ends, we might be in a state of chaos and flood. Stay away from damaged infrastructure, especially electricity because it will be dangerous if it is flooded.

- Phone connections may also be interrupted. So, make sure you only use it in an emergency. Don't go back to the danger zone unless the local government has called it safe.

Anticipation is key

Our reaction when a disaster occurs may not be optimal. Therefore, preparation or anticipation is key.

When going to travel, find as much information as possible about the area that will be visited. Is the area prone to certain disasters or not.

If yes, prepare everything that will help you if a disaster occurs. For example, know the evacuation route and understand the natural symptoms that might occur before the disaster arrives.

When traveling with family, make an agreement to meet if we and your family members are scattered.

When a tsunami begins with an earthquake, understand the possibility of aftershocks. The aftershocks can be weaker or stronger.

Ideally, prepare bags of equipment containing drugs, lighting or matches, spare batteries, blankets or sleeping bags, tissues, face masks, and drinking water.

This method can help us to save ourselves if a disaster occurs and has been done by many on a global scale.
